The De Colores Spanish Immersion Program arose out of my need as a new mother to find an early education setting that was stimulating, nurturing, and safe for my daughter.
While there are many such places in Washington DC, as a Hispanic mother in a Spanish-speaking household, it was difficult to find quality child care in a Spanish immersion setting.
For this reason, I decided to leave my job as an art teacher at a bilingual school here in Washington DC, and begin a program in which a child receives care, nurturing, stimulation, and affection in a Spanish immersion setting.
Since 2007 the De Colores Spanish Immersion Program has grown to include an infant/young toddler, toddler, and pre-K program.
At De Colores the child sets the rhythm. The teachers provide the instruments and the safe environment in which the child can explore and discover, little by little, his/her community and the world.
Play is essential to development as it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of the child. It is the principle means used at De Colores to allow the child to experience and express his/her feelings, develop personality, and learn to interact with others.
Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play.
The word “education” must not be understood in the sense of teaching but of assisting the psychological development of the child.
